For young children with challenging behaviors

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

PCIT coaches parents in real time to build a warmer relationship with their child and respond to tough behavior with confidence and consistency.

What is PCIT?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an evidence-based treatment for young children, typically ages 2 to 7, with frequent tantrums, defiance, aggression or other challenging behaviors. Instead of only talking about strategies, parents practice them with their child during sessions while the therapist coaches in the moment.

How PCIT works

1. Building the relationship

Parents learn specific skills, such as praise, reflecting and describing their child's play, that strengthen connection and naturally encourage positive behavior.

2. Effective discipline

Parents learn clear, calm and consistent ways to give instructions and follow through, so limits feel predictable to the child.

Progress is measured along the way, and treatment continues until parents feel confident and their child's behavior has improved.

Is PCIT right for your family?

  • Daily power struggles, tantrums or meltdowns
  • Defiance or oppositional behavior (including ODD)
  • Aggression toward siblings, peers or parents
  • Behavior problems at preschool or school
  • Parents who feel stuck, worn out or unsure what works

Ashley Labistour is a UC Davis–trained PCIT clinician who also brings years of experience in child therapy and parenting support.
